Tourist Trap

About This Project

Tourist Trap was developed by artists Phoebe Marsh and Rwig, with funding awarded from Marine Studio’s R&D platform. Tourist Trap was a ‘photographic scavenger hunt across time’, inspired by tourist snaps of Margate’s iconic waterfront over the last century. Teams were given four photos from the past and one hour to recreate these images. Participants raced to piece together the town’s history in the here-and-now, shifting narratives from deprivation to social engagement, connecting past economies with present ones. Each team’s photos were then uploaded to a digital network where viewers could share their creations.

Tourist Trap’s blend of site-specificity and flexibility led it to be adapted and presented in a number of locales from Rochester to Geneva. All you need is a camera phone and some ingenuity…
