What is Back & Fill?

Back & Fill is a coordinated response to the impact that Covid-19 is having on seaside communities around the UK. By connecting creatives with postponed events to local venues and businesses, Back & Fill will create a swell of tourism and creativity at the coast during October half term. Every event will be locally run and independently curated, but will be united with a shared cause and network of like-minded people.

Who can take part?

This project is about supporting creative and seaside town economies. If you have a business or venue in a seaside town, or if you are a creative with an idea you’d like to develop or a postponed event that you are looking to reschedule, then you’re exactly who we are looking for. 

How do I get involved?

You can get involved in one of two ways. First, check to see if there is a Back & Fill event already registered in the seaside town of your choosing. If so, reach out to the local coordinator and share with them what you would like to contribute to the local event. If your local town is not registered, consider becoming the local coordinator and registering yourself! You can do this by sharing a few simple details on the back and fill website.

Ok, I’ve signed up my seaside town. What should I do next?

Check out the toolkit to get inspiration about what to do next. It has a good outline for making a business plan for your local event, and some things you may want to consider along the way. We also suggest sharing your participation on social media so our followers can see what you have planned.

How do I connect with other Back & Fill festivals?

Everyone who registers to run a local Back & Fill will be sharing news with the Back & Fill hashtag on their relevant social media sites (#backandfill). This is the best way to see who else is signed up to take part and start connecting. We will also be working on connecting local co-ordinators through the open source toolkit where they can share ideas, and also by inviting everyone to a post event symposium. 

Does my event have to take place in October half term?

The idea of Back & Fill is to create one large swell of entertainment and creativity at the coast. This will work best if events are programmed within the same couple of weeks of the year. We have chosen October half term (with the backup of February half term 2021 if social restrictions continue). We encourage everyone to match these dates if you can. 

Can you help fund my local Back & Fill?

No. We are only a platform through which creatives and seaside towns can share resources and connect. Joining Back & Fill does not come with any financial support. 

I am a creative, but I don’t live in a seaside town, can I still take part?

Absolutely! If you are a creative who has a show or event that you would like to bring to a seaside town, feel free to reach out to local organisers to see if you can find a venue for your work/event.

I have a venue, but it is not in a seaside town, can I still take part?

I am afraid at the moment Back & Fill is about connecting seaside towns specifically. If there is a way for your business to come to seaside for the event, we’d love to have you! Otherwise, it may not be quite the right fit. However, please feel free to make use of our toolkit and support creatives in your local area by programming local events. 

My town isn’t listed, but I’m not sure I want the responsibility of running the local B&F. What should I do?

Back & Fill does not need to be a huge festival. It may just be one art show in a local coffee shop. It can be as large or as small as you are happy to manage. If you’re still not sure, you may want to reach out to other local venues and creatives to see if anyone else would be happy to take the lead so you can work together on it going forward. 

How do I go about funding my B&F?

Check out our toolkit for advice on where you may want to look for funding. Sadly, we cannot help support your event by providing any funding directly. 

Can I promote my events on the Back & Fill website?

We are more than happy to add case studies from past projects and share updates about events in different locations through our national updates on social media and the website. You can share any case studies or updates on your event with us at: wave@marinestudios.co.uk.

Will you provide a full directory of events in the lead up to October?

We have no plans to provide a full directory on behalf of every participating town. It is up to you to decide how you’d like to promote the events in your local Back & Fill. 

How do I connect my local Back & Fill to the wider national programme?

Simply share your updates on social media with the hashtag  #Backandfill and that will ensure everyone following us will see your event alongside everything else affiliated with the project.
